Specialized committees are bodies that normally operate outside the realm of the General Assembly, though remain mostly within the realm of the United Nations. Smaller and more intimate, Specialized committees tend to attract intermediate delegates.

Michigan Senate

The Michigan Senate at MSUMUN X seeks to engage students in the state of politics through an innovative, legislative-style committee. Addressing issues pertinent to today’s constantly changing political scene, students will embark on a three-day journey to save the state, immersing themselves in public policy, economics, and sociology. The committee will delve into questions such as: What will it take to transition Michigan’s economy after the collapse of the auto industry? How can we ensure every Michigan citizen receives a good education? In the 21st century, what role does sustainability play in politics? What should Detroit do to revitalize itself? And ultimately, how can the Michigan Senate make the state a place people want and are able to live?

Group of 20

The Group of 20 is the gathering of the worlds nineteen larges economies and the European Union in conversation on matters pertaining to the international financial system. It has permanently replaced the Group of 8 as the main economic council of wealthy nations, in order to better promote global economic relations between developed and developing markets and states. The G-20 addresses issues that go beyond any one organization. The nations will be highly involved in rebuilding the world economy, and have already created a document, The Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy, to help identify causes of and solutions to the global financial crisis. This committee will work within declared G-20 policy on this crisis, in relation of other transnational economic issues.

League of Arab States

The League of Arab States at MSUMUN X will be a vibrant and engaging committee dedicated to exploring contemporary issues facing Arab states today. This specialized agency will be comprised of 22 member states, offering a smaller and more personal committee environment.  Throughout the weekend, delegates will be encouraged to develop innovative approaches to critical problems in order to reenact the Arab League and accurately mirror the aims of the organization as stated in the Charter, “to draw closer the relations between member States and co-ordinate their political activities with the aim of realizing a close collaboration between them, to safeguard their independence and sovereignty, and to consider in a general way the affairs and interests of the Arab countries.”
