Slaying the Qing Dragon: The Revive China Society, 1894
It is 1894, and China is at war with Japan. Although the war only recently started, China has already suffered a string of embarrassing defeats, which have exposed corruption and ineptitude within the ruling Qing government. This has led many to question the Qing Dynasty’s ruling authority. One such person is Sun Yat-sen, who has a vision for China that sees over 2,000 years of imperial rule come crashing down. In the old regime’s place, Sun Yat-sen seeks to establish a republic. To achieve this goal, he has formed a secret revolutionary society known as the “Revive China Society.” For the new secret society’s vision to come to fruition, it must gather resources and support from within China. This is critical should the organization engage in successful armed uprisings against the Qing government. However, the society has already been faced with some roadblocks. Based in Hong Kong, the new society is facing growing pressures from the Qing court to expel them from China. In addition to this, the new organization must garner international support to have any hope of surviving. Will the Revive China Society successfully upend more than 2,000 years of Chinese imperial tradition? Or will it fall flat on its face trying?
