The World Trade Organization (WTO) is a global organization that sets and manages the rules for trade between nations. With its General Council meeting in Geneva, Switzerland, in February 2027, the committee seeks to discuss the challenges to the global economy and, further, sustainable development. The World Trade Organization's purpose is to help trade flow smoothly and freely among its 166 member countries. In the midst of the past decade, global trade has been in a delicate state due to escalating restrictive tariffs and rising trade barriers. Tariffs have become a larger part of the global economy, slowing global trade growth and working hand in hand with rising protectionist policies and geopolitical conflict. Meanwhile, there is growing pressure for sustainable development in international trade as countries seek to balance economic growth with environmental protection. Environmental issues are becoming increasingly tied to global politics and development, and are getting impossible to ignore. This committee's first topic will be addressing trade barriers and protectionism in the global economy, and the second topic will focus on sustainable development in international trade. International cooperation is the only way to combat the problems our world faces, and delegates are advised to negotiate trade agreements and work together to build a future that promotes economic growth and sustainability for all.
